First off, you should take a look at the Loop.ph web site.

Because of Rachel Wingfield and Mathias Gmachl‘s efforts at Loop.ph, common objects can litterally glow. They even transformed bed linens into works or art using programmable light-emitting materials.

Loop.ph has proved quite creative with pillows and duvet covers that wake sleepers gradually with a gentle blue-green glow. That’s not to mention the curtains that seem to come alive as the sun sets. Hello nightlife!

The duo is always looking to push the concept forward and their latest offering is called Weather Patterns. Akin to your old aunt’s knee that hurts when it’s going to rain, a light display is the form of floral designs present changing patterns, based on a host of factors, like barometric pressure, temperature, humidity, precipitation, and wind speed. That sounds very promising to enhance cranky people’s mood while keeping normal people happy, even when it rains.

A working setup is on display at Droog Design in Amsterdam until April 9, 2006. You may not have to go there to experience the coolness of the Weather Patterns in person because, like most of their art, it could eventually find its way to more home-decor applications you can afford.

Loop.ph’s light-infused tablecloths and wallpapers can already be custom-ordered online, from their web site. Glow in the dark might just become the next big thing for the clothing industry. Light-emitting materials should find more practical applications as more designers embed them in a variety of products.
